2002 Mercedes Benz ML320 GEAR SHIFT LOCKS INN PARK

2002 ML320 occasionaly locks up in park and wont come out. Dealer says its a switch associated with the rear brake lites. Where is this switch and what is it called?

He may be refering to the stop lamp switch. This is located under the drivers dash. Remove the under dash cover and follow the brake pedal up. You will see a white switch about 3" long with a plunger at the end that meets with the brake pedal. This is the stop lamp switch. With the vehicle off disconnect the electrical connector (should only have 1 at the rear of the switch). Now depress the brake pedal and grab the switch and turn it to the left. It should now pull out. Install the new switch with the brake pedal still depressed. Connect the connector and start the vehicle and test the component. You should have no issues any longer.
