1998 Mercedes Benz ML320 grinds and vibrates

Every ten minutes or so of driving, my car feels like it is going over rumble strips. It vibrates and makes a really loud grinding noise. I was told that a transmission seal blew? Not sure if that has anything to do with the problem. I would really appreciate any general ideas before I take it into a shop. Thanks!

If a trans seal blew you would probably know it, they tend to leak pretty bad. Can you tell if the noise/vibration is coming from any one particular wheel? Could be a bad wheel bearing that is acting up when hot. If it shifts correctly it may not be the trans, but without being able to hear it, it would be a tough call
