When I went to my Mazda auto dealer for my first oil change, I noticed that the dealer had used 5-30W instead of the 5-20W recommended in the owners manual. When I asked told the technician about it he said that there is no problem with using 5-30W rather than 5-20W and that it would not impact my warranty coverage. When I asked why he used the heavier weight oil he said that it was because it is better because of the hot weather driving conditions here in Florida. To me it sound suspicious and what I think happened is that they either by mistake or to save money used bulk oil. My question is will using 5-30W oil in a new car with recommended 5-20W harm or damage the car or could it void the warranty coverage?

Ok I would insist on the 5w-20 as your vehicle calls for. Telling you that 5w-30 is better is not wrong but not the right answer either. The manufacture has its recomended oils because that is where the engine gets its best mileage and best engine wear. It will not harm your engine but you may notice a very slight drop in MPG. So I wouldn't panic but I would on the next oil change insist on the oil you want and if they don't have it ask if you can bring your own oil next time.
