Noises problem
1990 Mazda RX7 Two Wheel Drive Manual 50000 miles

I have a 1990 Mazda rx7, non turbo, 13b rotary engine. It recently started making a squeaking noise whenever downshifting or letting off the gas while in gear. When I speed up, it stops. No noises in neutral or when turning or braking. It sounds like its coming right from underneath the shifter, Hope its not a bad transmission. Let me know if you have any ideas, thanks

Hi taf788,

Thank you for the donation.

I do not think it is a fault with the transmission itself.

If the gear shift seems a little loose, it could be due to worn gear lever bushes.

Since the noise only occurs when downshifting or under engine braking conditions ( when accelerator pedal is released ), I would suggest checking the transmission and engine mounts.

Bad mounts would allow the trans and engine to tilt and that can result in noises if the tilting causes the trans to come into contact with nearby components.
