1995 Mazda Protege only on acceleration

When cool, it runs rough. When warm, runs ok unless I press the pedal to hard or punch it. Then it runs rough, like it is going to stall.
does the same thing in neutral, so its not the tranny.
sound like advance timing is not working.

Check the air intake hose, especially the accordian like section, for a crack. An air leak in this hose allows air in past the mass airflow sensor and will cause the symptoms you describe. You can buy a replacement online for about $36, dealership will want around $60.
