My car overheated last night and lost its coolant, although I never saw any steam or smoke coming from the engine. When it overheated, it went back and forth from cool air and hot air on the heater air coming out. Today I added water to see if it would lose its water, and it held the water and stayed at a normal operating temp. I thought the thermostat might be sticking, but I also heard a noise coming not from a belt, but possibly from the thermostat or water pump. Could the water pump have leaked, but now be not leaking, and can a sticking thermostat make a noise?

HI there, normally when a water pump fails it stays faulty, a stuck thermostat will cause the engine to boil in the block this will make a strange noise, I would replace the thermostat and get the radiator flushed & flow tested, have the cooling system pressure tested as well as this will show up a faulty water pump seal.
