Check engine light

Hi
In the past our check engine light was a steady light. Had oil changed and went out was fine. Now for some reason it is flashing any reason for that happening or what it would be? The van has been running kinda rough and want to get it in for service, but hopeing to kinda get a heads up if something more than just that.
