Engine Performance problem
1989 Mazda b2200 4 cyl Two Wheel Drive Manual

I have an 89 Mazda B2200. While driving the truck it lost power and stalled like it was out of gas. Put gas in it cranked but no start. Replaced spark plugs, cap and rotor, tested for spark, checked timing alignments. The carb seems to be receiving gas. If we advance the timing fully the engine will sometimes start. We checked the fuel pump pressure and it had 2-3 psi but fluctuated alot and the pressure dropped as soon as we stopped cranking. Please help.

You need to check the timing belt. Pull off the two plastic timing belt covers (upper & lower covers) and rotate the engine by hand (21mm socket and ratchet on the crankshaft bolt at the front of the motor in the center of the lower pulley) until the timing marks are aligned to the cast-in pointers on the oil pump (crankshaft pulley) and the upper timing/distributor housing (camshaft pulley). Both of these cast-in timing marks are above the respective pulleys/gears. If you purchase a Haynes manual for the truck they will have a step by step procedure on changing the timing belt, with drawings! These engines are NON-interference engines so if the timing belt breaks or slips (as in your case I think) you don't have to worry about the valves hitting the pistons.
