Brakes problem
1999 Mazda 626 4 cyl Automatic 137000 miles

Hi,

Just what I was looking for, free car advise.

I just bought my 99 mazda 626 wagon & have noticed 2 things, that I'm not sure about.

1. When stoping at low speeds under 40km brakes have grinding metal noise. Doesn't happen with freeway braking. Doesn't happen all the time. Car has just come from dealer where they had done 5 point inspection (which I guess would include some kind of brake check), and has full service history.

2. Car is rolling back when in drive, and stopped at lights, on medium slope. Have let it roll about 1metre. Have never had a car do that to me before, is it normal, is there things I can check.

Any advise.

Many thanks
Hayley

Sound like you have a brake pad or pads worn out
the rolling back at a stop is normal for some cars in drive.
The famous "5 point" inspection is;
1- do the tires have air
2- does it start
3- does it move
4- does it stop
5- is it shiney

Thanks for your reply.

Should have guessed 5 point inspection would be something like that.

I have to have it serviced in 6 months, so I might see how brakes go, maybe hold off and have them looked at during service.

Does anyone else have a mazda, and can confirm that roll back is common?

If you are grinding, metal to metal on your brakes, you don't have 6 months. At least have someone look at them that won't try to sell you a $1200 brake job using "scare tactics". I can't stress having them checked enough, you don't really have to have them fixed but, at least you will know whats wrong. Did you get any kind of a warranty?

Car came with 3 year warranty. Sales women said everything except things that are changed during service were under warranty.

Thanks for getting back to me. I will either take car back to Mazda service centre or to my local mechanic.

If you have had the car less than 3 years, it is definately a warranty issue. You may want to get a second opinion before you go to the dealer. It's best to have both barrels loaded when you talk to a "dealer". I could tell you horror stories from this site that would keep you here all day. One nice thing about working on this site is that we're "on your side, not the dealer or repair shop's". Let me know how it comes out.
