Transmission problem
1989 Mazda 626 6 cyl Wheel Drive Type unknown Automatic 150000 miles

For an automatic do u check the transmission fluid while the vehicle is running or when it is off and standing still much like you do when you are checking the oil.

If you do check the transmission fluid while the car is running, why is that?

Thank you.

You check most auto transmissions hot, Running &in park or neutral. This is because unlike manual gear boxes that just use a splash feed system, the cluster gear rotates in the oil & splashes enough oil for lubrication, Autos must fill all the lines, servos, torque converters, coolers, valve body etc, if the oils checked stopped the level will be higher than required for operation, so the correct level is, as in operation, with all systems charged.
Check yours running in neutral.
