My battery died over the long weekend. When I finally got it started, I noticed a whirring/clicking sound when I took my foot off the brake (kinda like when a cassette tape gets to the end, just before it stops). It seems to be coming from the shift lever console. It sat dead for a few days before I could get the battery replaced, and some rain leaked in & dripped on the console/shift lock key area. Any idea what I'm looking at here? Is it a shift cable or solenoid? Is it going to hurt anything to keep driving it with the noise?

Was only in Park at first. Within a few minutes, it was occurring in all gears (Park, Reverse, Neutral, Drive). Every time I take my foot off the brake, it makes the noise for about 20 seconds and then stops until I brake & release. When I turned off the car, it made the noise as soon as the key was turned off. Before I released the brake pedal.

Recent repairs: Rear brake rebuild 2 weeks ago, new battery today.

I would say it is most likely the shift lock solenoid. Check the key shift lock control unit as well.

When water entry occurs, it is best to get it dried out as prolonged damp conditions can cause wireharness damages and if the water had gotten to relays and control units, they can be damaged as well.
