2004 Mazda 3 Check Engine Light

I took my car to have state emissions testing done. My car passed just fine and I drove off and proceeded to run some errands. When I started the car after coming out of the store, my check engine light was on. Can this be triggered by something done during my emissions test?

The test usually done by plugging in the scanner (or reader )
scanner read only and nothing else

unless something was disconnected under the hood
check gas cap make sure its on and tight
scan for code
