Manual transmission whine and popping out of 5th gear.

Recently had engine replaced, clutch replaced, etc. Now transmission has a whine and will not stay in gear on its own. It pops out of gear. I have to hold the stick in 5th gear to have 5th gear work. When you first start car whining is ver loud, after 10 minutes or so of driving noise almost completely disappears. If the clutch pedal is depressed the noise also almost disappears even when transmission is cold.

My question is: what could cause this whine and popping out of gear. I didn't have this problem before the engine was swapped. Same size engine was replaced. Could it be linkage, bad throw out bearing, or pilot bearing?

Thanks for the prompt reply. I had the throwout bearing replaced when the clutch and engine were replaced. What could cause the transmission to pop out of only 5th gear if the throw out bearing isnt the culprit? I would think if the bearing is the entire problem then the transmission would pop out in any gear, not just 5th. Is it possible the synchronizers are bad in the transmission? I didn't have this problem until after I had the engine, clutch, throwout bearing, pilot bearing, installed professionally.

Make sure the shifter linkage is engaging the trans all the way into gear. If it is, then you likely just have a worn out trans and the gears are moving around on a bad bearing.

Yes the linkage is engaging the transmission fully. I had another car a few years ago that did the same thing but would pop out of more than one gear, yet had a new throwout bearing. I replaced the transmission and drive that car another 200k miles before I sold it. The guy who bought it has taken that car to California a dozen or more times since from STL, Mo. Without a problem. Thanks once again for your time and advice. I truly appreciate
Your knowledge. Have a great day!
