We bought our van new and the wife drove it up until about a year and half ago. Somewhere in the 172,000's, the "maintenance required" light would blink about six times at me when I first started the vehicle and then would go away. At 173,400, it came on and has stayed. The wife kept up the regular work on the van so I am wondering what would trigger after 170,000 miles? The van is not worth a lot but then again it runs well so sticking some money into it is probably worth it. Thanks!

It is a service reminder that comes on at a certain mileage and starts with the blinking and progressing to being fully lit all the time.

The person who performed the last maintenance service did not reset the service mileage and it has come on prematurely for oil change but it has surpassed the last service mileage reset.

What you need to do is reset the service interval and all should be well. Procedure for resetting should be in the owner's manual.

To reset it is simple. Start with the key off.
Now press and hold the select/reset button, turn the key to the "on" position (not start)
Hold the button for ten seconds once you turn the key on.
Light should reset and turn off.

It comes on to tell you to change the oil, or that some other item should be serviced. As long as you keep the oil and filter changed and things like air filters, transmission, coolant and the rest you can reset it as you like. Some people do not ever check those items and the light is there to remind them.
