I’ve been trying to replace the lower radiator hose but I’d like to know how to connect it on the water pump end. I can’t slip it on all the way the other end to the radiator connecting is easy to do, would I have to remove the entire bracket assembly that holds the power steering pump, A/C compressor and alternator?

Hi,

The directions in the manual are very basic. Here they are. I will discuss other options after these directions. Note: The attached pics correlate with the directions.

PROCEDURES
Removal

WARNING: Never remove the radiator cap under any conditions while the engine is operating. Failure to follow these instructions could result in personal injury and/or damage to the cooling system or engine. To avoid having scalding hot coolant or steam blow out of the radiator, use extreme care when removing the radiator cap from a hot radiator. Wait until the engine has cooled, then wrap a thick cloth around the radiator cap and turn it slowly to the first stop. Step back while the pressure is released from the cooling system. When you are certain all the pressure has been released, press down on the radiator cap (with a cloth) turn and remove.

1. Radiator hoses should be checked as directed in the applicable maintenance schedule. Replace whenever they become cracked, rotted or have a tendency to collapse.

2. Drain the radiator.

Pic 2

3. Release hose clamps and position out of the way.
4. Slide the hoses off each connection. Remove the hoses from the vehicle.

Installation

CAUTION: Reposition the clamps beyond the bead and place in the center of the clamping surface of the connections. Constant-tension hose clamps must be installed inside the alignment marks or engine coolant leaks and engine damage may occur.

Pic 3

1. Position the hose clamps at least 50.8 mm (2 inches) from each end of the hose.
2. Slide the hoses on the connections.

Pic 4

3. Position the hose clamps in the center of the clamping position at least 3.2 mm (0.126 in) from end of hose.
4. Fill the radiator with the recommended 50/50 mixture and water.

As far as the lower hose, the easiest way to access it is through the inner fender. If you remove the right front wheel and then the plastic inner fender, you should be able to see it easier.

If you look at pic 5, it shows the hose as it's attached to the pump. If you are trying to access it from the top of the vehicle, it will be very difficult, and I think that is what you are doing.

Let me know if that helps.

Joe

Thank you. I did remove the right side wheel to access it but could get it on. I was able to get the old one off successfully but just the new one I could not get on. I even tried removing the tensioner pulls to get better clearance but the bolt to the tensioner was too long. It wouldn’t clear the chassis body. Is it possible that the water pump hose end on the new hose is too narrow or tight? Are all the hose brands made different?

Hi,

Anything is possible. Did you compare the two? I can't understand why it wouldn't go on. It may be tight, but still should slide on. Usually I have to twist back and forth to get them.

Also, if you have the clamp partially on the hose before installing it, that may be stopping it. It's just a thought. Make sure it is loose or pulled back on the hose at least three inches.

Let me know if you get it.

Joe
