I recently got an oil change done at Valvoline. Before going the car was running perfectly fine and was at 15,000 miles since the last oil change. The day after the oil change I was driving up through a mountain pass, as I neared they top the low oil pressure warning can on and I was lucky enough to be able to turn off the highway right away and shut the car off. The vehicle was towed back to my place. Thinking Valvoline did not add enough oil my father in law decided to drain the oil and do another oil change. Upon draining the oil he discovered that there was nearly 7 quarts of oil.

After completing the oil change and resetting the check engine lights we decided to test the car. After about 200 feet the light turned back on.

The car runs on 0w-16 full synthetic oil. So all oil changes were done around 10,000 to 15,000 miles.

Any advice or feedback will be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

First off, since this is a brand new vehicle we need to get this to a dealer ASAP. The reason is, more then likely this is covered under warranty and the more you do to try and fix it, the more the dealer is going to push back saying it is something that you did to cause it and not cover it.

However, we need to check what the oil pressure actually is with a gauge in order to determine if this is a sensor issue or an actual low pressure issue. Here is a guide that will help explain the possible causes of low pressure:

Let us know what the oil pressure is with a gauge and we can go from there. Thanks

Hello!

Thank you for the quick reply. The car is at the dealership now and they are running diagnostics. That’s one of the questions I will ask when they follow up with me later today. What is the normal pressure level?

Sounds great. I attached the info but it looks like at lower RPM it is 12 PSI and higher RPM 29 RPM or higher. Take a look at the info and then keep us posted with what they find. Thanks

The oil pressure sensor was shot. Dealership replaced it under warranty. The car runs great now. Thank you!
