I just had my muffler and tail pipe replaced and I was driving down the highway pulling my small pop up camper when it just lost power going forward. It would still run but had no power. Pretty much had to coast to a stop. Also noticed while sitting there, it was wanting to overheat which it has never done. The tow truck driver tried to drive it up onto his truck and it didn't have enough power to do it. RPM's would also not go above 2,000.

Hi,

First, was the check engine light staying on when this happened? If it was, then you really should scan the computer to see what diagnostic trouble codes have been stored. That can point you in the right direction.

Here is a quick video showing how it's done:

I realize most people don't own a scan tool, but that is where I would start. Here is a list of codes for you to review. If the vehicle is at home and you don't have a scanner, see if a parts store near you will lend one to you.

Since there was just work done to the exhaust, there are a couple things I question. First, was any damage done to the catalytic converter which is plugged will cause a power loss. Also, a weak fuel pump can also cause this.

If possible, let me know what you know so far and your questions. Also, let me know if you can scan the computer and the codes found.

Take care,
Joe

The engine light was on but that is because it is always on because of a 10 year battle over it constantly telling me I have a bad gas cap. I’ve replaced gas caps and sensors and somehow it always seems to come back on. But I will have it checked again.

Hi,

It would be a good idea to check if there are new codes present. Also, as far as the gas cap issue, what code is it? Since the cap didn't fix the issue, chances are there is an EVAP leak at some point. I can explain how to check for that, but I need to know the specific code that was found.

Let me know what you find.

Joe
