Loose gear shift

When in neutral, I can move the shifter forward and backwards easily two to three inches.

It sounds like the linkage bushings are worn or missing, a clip came off, or the cables are extremely stretched. However, my first guess is that one or more of the nylon bushings at the ends of the cables has come apart or worn.

Take a look at the picture I attached. Inspect the clips, the ends where the cable attaches to both the transmission and the shifter in the vehicle, and any evidence of something worn.
