Recently, I had my mechanic give my truck some TLC after having over 130,000 miles. Replaced intake, valve cover, and oil pan gaskets. Then, new coils (square), spark plugs and plug wires, and new injectors. Now, it's giving an issue. Cold crank after sitting overnight it does well, even cranking like on the touch of the ignition. But, let it sit for about 10 minutes or more, and she has a long crank issue. Like 15 seconds or so. When it finally cranks, smoke, like rich, raw gas comes out the exhaust like it's flooded. He's replaced the injectors with another set, and we thought it got the issue, but it's back only a few days later. I'm not sure if the injectors are leaking while it sits or if there's some other issue. It runs perfect once it blows out that puff of smoke and gas smell. It even has more power and better MPGs. Just we can't figure out the long, flooded like crank deal.
Anyone have any ideas? Could it be another set of bad injectors or is there something else that he might be missing.
Thanks for any advice/help.

Hi,

Based on what you described, it does sound like the injectors are leaking. You can do what is called a leak down test on them to see how quickly pressure drops off.

I attached the diagnostics below. Take a look through them and let me know if this is something you are comfortable performing.

Let me know.

Take care,

joe

Thanks. I will have my mechanic do that. It could be bad injectors. Probably from overseas in the first place. I'll ask him if he's done the leak down test and see if he has and maybe we can nail this situation down soon.
Thanks a lot.

Hi,

You are very welcome, Tim. Let me know how things turn out for you or if you have other questions. Also, it may not be a bad idea to confirm the fuel pressure regulator is working properly and that the new injectors are the same as the original ones.

Let me know.

Take care,

joe

Just responding back, Joe, and letting you know that it was the injectors. Bad ones, all of them leaking. So, we're going on to another manufacturer. Aftermarkets can be quite wishy washy, as many know. These were all bad and leaking internally. So, just waiting on the new ones, and hoping they are good. Hard to find aftermarkets, and really hard to find, and afford OEM make injectors.4 times the price or more. But if these don't work, then, we'll just have to OEM anyway and be done with it. Got to watch aftermarket parts these days. Many are made overseas with very little if at all integrity anymore. So, until the new ones come in and hope they are good, it's cranking with clear flood as I crank it over so not to wind it up for a long time and burn a starter up.
Thanks again for the reply. Take care.

Hi,

Thank you for the update. You would be amazed how many aftermarket parts are faulty anymore. If you have the original ones that were removed, it's likely you would be better off with them.

Let me know if I can help in any way.

Take care of yourself,

Joe

Update on the injector issue. New set of injectors, 3rd set, these from a 3rd supplier, and it still does it's long crank and flooding issue. Pressure tests are showing perfect, my mechanic said, and he cannot figure out why it keeps doing this, especially with it's 3rd set from a 3rd manufacturer. I have to take it back for him to see if there's some other issue he's missing, but it appears we've gotten 3 bad sets. Not sure if it's because they're aftermarket, or if there is some other issue, but leaking into the cylinders or on top of the valves, and when you spin it over it takes about 10 seconds to hit, then puffs out that strong gas smell of a flooded engine. Cold crank overnight or longer, it's fine. Guess I'll discuss with him about getting OEMs, IF they're available, and if they are 3 times the price is going to have to do it and hope, and if that doesn't do it he's going to have to go thru a lot of things, maybe programming after replacing them, who knows. Oh, the issues of doing upkeep on an older model where the majority of parts have to be aftermarket. He doesn't think it's anything to do with the new coils, plugs, or plug wires, nor the new intake, valve cover, and oil pan gaskets, as what could those cause that would make 1 or more injectors leak down. Sitting there with pressure, and the injectors out and watching it doesn't even drip over a couple hour period. Weird issue. I've researched, he's researched, and all things point to the injectors, but when you don't see a single drip after sitting for a few hours. ARRRGHHHH. Lol. Anyway, thought I'd update you again. Thanks. Oh, to have the money to just buy a new truck or drop in a fully built Texas Speed engine. Like maybe a 400ci or larger, but, then again, I could buy a brand-new truck for that price. LOL. Cheers.

Hi,

Do me a favor. Using a live data scan tool, check the engine coolant temperature sensor (ECT) signal before starting it for the day (engine cold). The signal should indicate close to ambient temperature. We may have a sensor telling the PCM it is -40 degrees which will cause the engine to run extremely rich (if it runs at all).

Let me know.
