Did the 96 town car come out with two different type lower ball joints? My repair manuel shows to replace the lower control arm, the picture of the ball joint does not match what is on my car.

There may or may not be. I see one manufacturer does list 2 different part numbers.
I checked with Napa and they also list 2 different ones, but the difference is one is oversized. Probably for ones that damaged the control arm.

The manuals give you the information they get from the manufacturer. The manufacturer often does not give ball joint relacement, rather control arm replacement only. Pictures are not always accurate either. Another thing that can affect this is if there was a design change between years. Say you have an early 1996 model, it may fall into a 1995 suspension. I know it sounds screwy, but this industry is very much that.
