Car starts then RPMs reduce and shut car down

I have a 2000 Lincoln continental v8. I have an intermittant problem. Sometimes when I start the car, it just shuts itself off without moving out of the Park position.

After several tries, starting and shutting down immediately, I can keep the rpm up by staying on the
throttle and I can put into drive and go.

It seems to smooth out after driving a mile or two and idle holds at 900 rpms when idling.

I had the problem 1 day 3 months ago. Worked perfect until today.

Any suggestions what is going on?

My 99 continental did the same thing.I pulled the Idle air motor out and cleaned it with some Carb cleaner. It hasn't stalled on me since. Good luck.

The battery and alternator where inspected today. The results of the test are good and both components are working. I also cleaned the sensor that is located in intake tube and the only thing that I can think of trying is to perform a tune-up.

I also read this that fieronut72 did.

I am going to looking at my manual to see where this is located so that I can give it a try. I pick up a can of air intake/carb cleaner. Does my car even have a carb? I didn’t think it did.

Thanks

Well, my car did shut down once since my last post and I did have a mechanic friend spray the air idler down. I will see what happens later on this week.
