My 2002 Lincoln Continental has a cooling problem. When I stop at a red light, the heat begins to go cool. Once I accelerate, the heat gets hot again. There are times however, that it will go cool and not get hot again and the temperature guage rises to the red. Also, if I start the car up and let it idle, it will overheat. I took this to my mechanic and he replaced the thermostat and confirmed that the radiator was not plugged. In additon, he confirmed that the water pump appeared to be in working order. He also performed a chemical test and it came back clear. He has bled the system for air pockets and it still continues to get hot. He has all but given up on this problem at this point. What could be the problem?

See since you have heat and no overheating and then it start to over heat and cold air inside (lake of coolant in the system )
its an engine issue have to check engine and coolant system for leaks
check intake manifold and gasket for leaks

I drove the car tonight. Had heat for a little while then everything went cold inside. Then at one point it got warm again and then went cold. Temperature guage spiked. Coolant full. Seems to be acirculation problem. T-stat new. Radiator has been flushed. I am thinking water pump. Sorry but your answer only advised me to check the things I mostly already have. Can't check head gaskets very eailsy at all. You should know this. Plus, car passed chemical test.

What you are describing is an indication of low coolant and not poor circulation
sorry I dont know where is the leak
my advise is to have the intake manifold gasket checked as it was a common failure
