Wagon was running fine yesterday until I turned around and started back home. She started jerking really bad so I let off the pedal then back on the pedal I noticed she slipped into limp mode. I limped her home about 3 miles. I had an incorrect gear ratio in 2nd. I checked the transmission fluid. It was bright pink but smelled funny, not burnt but different! I cleared the codes and let her sit overnight and this morning went for a 5-mile ride and she's doing fine! No codes or lights. Now when she went into limp mode there never was a light on. Do you think it could be that the fluid or filter is dirty or getting clogged up? Also, I turned the carrier bearing around and there is only a slight vibration (I'm thinking tires) now the CB is backwards but its lined up. Isn't the shaft supposed to be on the left? (Pics are from the front looking towards the back) Also in the rearend where the shaft hooks up there is almost half circle play, is that normal?

Hi,

A half-inch play in the U-joint doesn't sound good. Is that in the joint or the differential? Also, how would you best describe how the transmission smelled? If it is still a pinkish color, then chances are it isn't too dirty.

Also, if the vehicle was in limp mode, it should have set a code. What happened to make you feel it was in limp mode? Do you have a scanner to check if there are any codes pending?

Let me know.

Take care,

Joe

The wagon wouldn't go over 40 and wouldn't shift up or down. My Diablo tuner i3 showed P0730 incorrect gear ratio for 2nd gear. If youl ook at the pics I sent. You can see that the diff. Bushings are worn pretty bad. Do you think that could be my le problem?

Hi,

I did a little research on the code you provided. What I'm reading is that it is set for one of three reasons, the TCM, internal damage, or a wiring issue. I attached the info below for diagnostics.

As far as the differential bushing, there are no parts and labor listed. The parts won't be available from Chrysler any longer, so you will need to find aftermarket bushings.

As far as the labor, it will be somewhat high. Basically, everything at the rear needs to be removed. For example, the exhaust, brakes, shocks, and basically the entire rear suspension assembly. I would expect the labor would be in excess of 5 hours.

Let me know if that helps and what you find with the diagnostics.
