After accelerating down the road yesterday, mistakenly turned the overdrive "off" and tried to pass a slow-moving car. Engine revved up without gaining speed, then kicked back, followed by a loud repetitive knocking sound (as well as the check engine light flashing). Vehicle now continues to knock loudly whenever idling, and becomes noticeably louder when opening the throttle (accelerating/decelerating). Oil was low (so topped it off), and is still making noise.

This may be a bearing problem as we cannot hear it have it. Checked locally.

Thank you for the prompt response. I do not believe there is a way to upload sound files on this site (I could be wrong). I am pretty certain the sound is coming from the engine, not from the body of the vehicle. I am also afraid to drive it all, so it will most likely have to be towed if it is going anywhere.

Well if you do not have any lights on the dash you should be okay to drive it someplace to get it checked. Or if you can disconnect a spark plug one at a time and the knocking stops then that will tell you which cylinder it is.
