2002 Kia Sportage Hot engine while idling

Whenever my Kia is idle say at a drive through or just doing a lot of in town driving I notice that the temperature gauge for the engine gets quite hot, but once I start picking up the speed after a few minutes it goes down. My check engine light has been recently going on and off and I was wondering what the problem might be.
