1999 Kia Sportage Started with a parking brake issue

Today I parked briefly (5 minutes) on an incline and forgot to put on my parking brake. When I reversed out, my engine started sputtering and the "check engine" light came on. When I'd slow to a stop, the engine would drop out of gear and I'd have to restart the car.

Did forgetting to put on the parking brake bring this on? I haven't had any previous problems with the car. It felt like the engine just wouldn't catch after the parking brake issue.
