Whenever I come to a stop sign or red light, my car growls, then dies. It used to immediately start back up again, but once the weather got cooler, it started taking about 30 seconds of turning the key to turn it back on.

It sounds like a fuel problem, but you need to check something. When the car won't start, check to see if you are getting spark and fuel to the engine. My guess is one will be missing. Once you determine this, then we will be able to move on to determine where the problem may be coming from. Also, has the check engine light ever come on?
