Went to the store to pick up a few things and the car started right up as usual when leaving. Upon getting home, I went to turn the car off and the key will not turn at all from that position (The ON position). So the car would not turn off and it was still running. Had to pull the fuel pump fuse to stop the engine and then disconnect the battery so it wouldn't go dead. Any idea what would cause this and is there a work-around to get the key to turn to the OFF position? No previous indication of problems with the ignition switch. Is it the lock cylinder needing replacement or is there something else not allowing the switch to be turned to the OFF position. Like maybe a problem with it not sensing the car is in PARK? Thanks for any help.

Nope you are correct, the ignition lock tumbler had fallen part internally. Does the car go into park cleanly? If so the lock cylinder is to blame. You need to disconnect the battery and remove the steering wheel to replace the part. I would get the new ignition key tumbler from the dealer, here is how to change it out.

Thanks Ken for the responce. Yes, it shifts fine to any gear, including Park. Looks like the main issues repairing it will be getting the steering wheel off and reprograming the new ignition switch. Do you know if the procedure that I've read about where you turn the key to the ON position for 10 minutes, then off for 30 seconds 3 times works to program a new key? If that doesn't work, I assume a Locksmith would be able to do it. Do they use your existing key before installing the new switch to re-key it or a new key that comes with the switch?

Yes, the key relearn should work that way, if not a mobile locksmith can do the work for you, I would keep the old key incase thy need it.
