Jeep has 2.5 4cyl. With 34 inch tires and 4.10 rear gear. Rear end locked up and need to replace. Bought Jeep from someone who did a good bit of off-roading. I'm not so interested in off road performance, but would like to improve gas mileage and road performance. Had to shift gears at much higher rpm than desired, and 5th gear was pretty much useless at highway speeds, even on a slight grade. With this engine and tire size combination, what would be the best rear gear to go with. It's a second pleasure vehicle, not a daily driver.

I upgraded to a 8.8 from a explorer with 4.88 gears. I was able to get 5th gear back and seams to be getting better gas milage. You will need to replace the carrier in the 8.8 because they are weak. But over all stronger than a Dana 44.
