The gas gauge on my 1993 Jeep Grand Cherokee does not work, and the idiot light stays on. Without getting into all the problems I have found with this vehicle, someone has "worked on" the area of the gas tank prior to this. There is an oval plug with wires leading to the top of the fuel pump module and connecting to the female end at the front of the gas tank. The tabs that lock this plug together have been broken off. When I disengaged the plug and removed the gas tank, it looked as though the male end of the plug may have been installed upside down into the female end. There are 3 prongs on one row and 2 prongs on the other row inside the female end of the plug. Could that plug be installed upside down? Would that cause the gas gauge and idiot light to malfunction? Since this is such a time consuming procedure, would you suggest that I replace the fuel pump module anyway since I have the gas tank out? Thanks for your assistance.

Try to get a wiring diagram for the fuel gauge/pump. Check the color of the wires to make sure they are in the plug correctly. I would also replace the pump/sender assemblies. It would also be a good idea to check for a ground either in the harness, or to the sending unit/pump. Good luck. Mickey-d
