Front and Rear Differential Service, is it necessary?

I use my vehicle for common everyday driving to and from work, travel, etc. I used the 4WD a couple of times last winter (both H and L) and haven't used it since. My Jeep dealer is telling me that I need to spend $300 to service both front and rear differential.

I have heard from others that this is a service that may never have to be performed. However, I do want to protect my vehicle. Any thoughts?

The differentials should be serviced but there are two things. First, it doesn't need to be done at 20,000. Review your manual to confirm manufacturers recommendations. If I recall it is either 50,000 or 100,000. Next, the amount they are charging is too much. They will be using about 20 dollars in gear lube, a 5-dollar gasket for the rear differential and that's it. The rest is labor. Figure both could be done in about an hour. That leaves approximately 275.00 in labor. Is that what they charge per hour?
