1998 Jeep Laredo SECON GEAR SLIP/NO REVERSE

I have a 98 Jeep Grand Laredo with automatic transmission 42RE. When I drive the second gear slips but 3rd and 4th runs great but I don't have reverse. After running the jeep forward awhile then I have reverse when jeep cools down I loose reverse again.

If you have a four wheel drive vehicle, then you do not have a 42RE transmission, it should be a 44RE transmission, the 42RE is for 2wheel drive vehicles. The slipeage that you are talking about and reverse coming and going may be caused by a pump failure or pressure regulator failure in your transmission. Take it to a shop and they will tell you if it needs rebuilt or not but watch out because some shops will tell you that it needs a rebuild even if it does not.
