1996 Jeep Laredo axle going bad?

Whenever I turn right or left I hear a loud clunking or popping noise. Its under the front drivers side. And whenever it does it I can feel it on my feet. My father said it might be the axle but im not sure. Do you have any idea as to what it could be? And how much im looking at to fix it?

Check to make sure your front U-joints are not loose, then if they are tight, you need to check the chain in your transfercase. This is a common occurance with the popping or clunking while turning because it puts a bind on the transfer case.
