Recently my brake pedal has become extremely hard to depress. I used to have a old chevy and the problem feels like a power brake booster fail. But I think it must be something besides that. Is there any advice you can give?

1- master cylinder
2- wheel cylinders
both will cause a hard pedal. Check for vac leaks at the power booster, hoses etc. Check wheel cyls for fluid leaks.
MAster cyl isnt too bad to DIY. Unless you dont have the stuff to bleed the system.

If you have noticed a decreasing ability to stop over time. And havent done any brake work in years, figure brake job all around :-(
