My Jeep Commander 2006 model v8 4.7l with 24,062 under it's belt was doing fine, until yesterday. After doing about 25 miles I had a brief stop, & tried to start, then I heard a noise (burst) under the hood & was smoking. When I checked the battery lids have poped out & smoke was coming out from within the battery, & noticed leaks from battery. The vehicle had to be taken to the dealer on a Recovery vehicle. How could this have happened as I didn't notice any signs of a weak battery nor there was any activation of warning for over charging etc.

Hi there,

I have see this before, when a battery is low on water and it is gassing off (hydrogen gas) an internal fault with the battery or an external source of ignition and Ka Boom. One dead battery. Make sure every thing is washed down or the acid will make a mess. When battery replaced have the charging system inspected for any fault.
