Electrical problem
1981 Jeep CJ7 V8 Four Wheel Drive Manual PLENTY miles

CJ7 -Chevy 350 It is professionally restored but don't trust wire colors - had to trace manually. Pretty sure the rest is all jeep oem on the column to the firewall.

Son removed starter to replace cracked solenoid w/o removing wires - now I have two bare 14g wires with unknown connection locations.

BATT POS is still connected
Green to ign sw (12v with Key start) "S" on SOL
Engine cranks well with key start with these attached. I understand that the R posts are unused with HEI.

Need help locating other two wires:
Red to HEI (12V with Key on)
Brown to rear of fuse panel then I lost path through firewall/fuseblock but their is continuity between red and brown with key on. Otherwise brown has no voltage - did not try with key in start because starter cranks with green wire on solenoid "S" already)

In attempts so far best I can do is get engine to start but not shut off with key. That was with RED on BATT POS. Later I found Red has 12V when disconnected with key on. Replaced coil fuse after making sparks on one of many attempts at guessing locations w/o thinking it through. Oops. Found continuity between brown/red with key on - dead short! Measured from brown at back of fuse panel to red at hei.

OK let me try to understand here. What is happening is that you can start the jeep but will not shut off with key. This is because you have constant power to the + or batt side of the coil at the dist. Cap. You need to have power there only when in start and run possition and none in the off possition. So let me know what you are needing from here as I am not fully understanding your request.

Why was my answer not what you were looking for? Also I am not responsible for the refunds or anything with the money I just answer the questions.

But I determined my own solution within minutes of asking the question. Having to write the problem down allowed the thought process to figure out the solution. Their were a total of seven wires terminating at the starter and everything I read said that the R terminal was not used in HEI applications. In my case - the builder oft the vehicle found a use for it. Thanks anyway. I have the message I asked for the refund the day before you responded if you would like to be reassured that I am not taking advantage of your answer. I'm sure it happens but not here and not me.
