I have a Jeep Grand Cherokee Ltd 3.1 TD Automatic. Recently when I turned on the ignition there was a very loud noise coming from the engine, it appears the fan belt tensioner has broken and needs to be replaced, however when searching to buy this part there is nothing called a fan belt tentioner, there is however a viscous fan coupling, is this the samepart? Can anyone help please?

Are you sure it was the tensioner?
Who told you it was?
Did they try turning it?

Thanks for the reply, it was a mechanic who told me it was the tensioner, he showed me a round metal object which lies behind the fan, it was protruding at the bottom end, he said he had replaced similar parts but on other makes of cars.

Thanks very much for the suggestion I will pass it on, however is this part any easier to get than the tensioner, as I am having great difficulty locating a part in the uk other than Jeep main suppliers and believe me their prices are through the roof!

Not sure if you have any aftermarket car part suppliers over there.
About $30.00 U.S. Over here.
Dealers are usually more expensive.

Thanks very much, I wonder if you could let me know some names of suppliers in us that do these type of spares because I could contact them and get the part shipped if there is that much difference in the cost, I find the prices in your part of the world amazing.
Thank you again

Sorry to be such a nuisance but I have noticed when looking for these parts that the 3.1 Limited Edition Turbo Diesel is never mentioned, all engine sizes seem to be 4.0 litre, would parts for this engine be compatible to mine. :

They are probably not the same.
Try the next year when looking for parts.
I think the Grand Cherokee w/ 3.1 diesel is available in 07 in the states.
I think the 06 has either the 4.0 or the 5.2 gas engines.
