1999 Jeep cherokee, 4.0 strait 6, auto, 92,000 miles all stock except for CAI & Cat back exhaust. Was just told of excessive play in rear differential. Told me I need to replace entire rear axle. Cost= $1500+
Is this hard to replace if I buy an aftermarket? Our local Jeep Dealer is a real, er, crook.
How do I find out what I need? Can I upgrade to something better?
Wife sez sell, but I love my Jeep.
Any help appreciated.
BTW, please keep it simple. Anything beyond brakes/oil change & tune up is greek to me.
Thanx. 8)

If keep it simple is your motto. Sell.A junk rear end is many hours labor for a newbie. Not to mention the initial cost! But if taken to the right hands. An adjustment may be possible! What are the simptoms?
