2001 Grand Jeep Cherokee Limited - rear hatch lock broken

I have a 2001 Grand Jeep Cherokee Limited with 87,000 miles on it. My rear hatch lock will not unlock. This happened once before and we banged on it and then it opened. Well, after that it hasn't opened since. The mechanic told me to take it to an Auto body shop. I just recently spent $2200 on that car for other issues and I'm not looking to spend another huge amount. Any suggestions? Have you heard of this issue before?

Yea, my hatch sticks sometimes. The first time it happened we discovered that a small hand towel was stuck in the closing mechanism. It still sticks every once in a while but periodic lubrication with WD-40 seems to help a great deal.
