Air Conditioning problem
2000 Jeep Cherokee 68000 miles

I'm new to car repair and I'm determined to fix my Jeep's air conditioning. My local shop mentioned that the compressor needs to be replaced, but before I do that, I'd like to test to see for myself whether it's really broken. How can I do this? My car's service manual isn't very helpful in this regard, because it only mentions acoustic diagnostic tests to determine whether the compressor is making strange noises (it's not, as far as I can tell). Also, I've read up on A/C systems and it looks like there should be a condenser in my car, but the service manual doesn't say anything about that, either. Is there any way to test for that part? Thanks!

Hi there, any detailed diagnostics will require some special equipment, as will conducting any repairs, this gear is very expensive and is normally not what the the home mechanic would consider, we are talking $1000.00's here, you need a manifold pressure set to read the hi and low system pressures, a vacuum pump to degas and vacuum down the system for leak tests and preparation for re gassing, you need a weight station to fill the system with the correct amount of refrigerant, and this is not looking at special oils needed seals and electrical test equipment needed if the system electrics are down, thi sis a job best left for the professionals, otherwise it may cost you more in the long run.
