gauge was acting erratically then just pinged and stuck to high pressure, I am thinking of replacing the sending unit?

Sounds like a good idea after you check the oil pressure with a mechanical gauge-if the readings is too high the oil pump pressure relief valve is not opening-if normal go ahead and change out the pressure switch-
