1999 Jeep Cherokee oil pressure gauge reading

My oil pressure gauge reading went down shortly after I started driving. The check gauge light came on. I continued driving and the pressure gauge went back up and the check gauge light turned off. I continued driving and the gauge went back down. The gauge continued to go down then back up. I drove all the way home like this, about 5 miles at 40 mph. My car did not overheat. I am just wondering what could be wrong?

Hello and thanks for the donation

you need to check the oil level. Low oil will not cause overheating, it will simply cause damage to the internal parts of the engine. If the oil level is OK then suspect faulty oil pump
