Have a 2000 Jeep Cherokee that yesterday in the damp afternoon oafter a stop and start, the check engine light came on. Looking at the instrument panel the oil pressure was 60 to 80 PSI, from idle to driving. It did drop to 40 or so while driving. With igition turned to on only gauge shows about 18-20 psi, not running. Could the damp weather here in the NE caused the problem or might it be it the oil filter housing somewhere?

I would change the oil pressure sending unit. It most likely is that it is faulty. If this don't fix the problem then we can do some testing on the guage if you have a digital multi meter handy.

The oil pressure sounds normal just have someone get the readout from the check engine light, that's why they come on so you can plug it in to find out what's wrong.
