1997 Jeep Cherokee Check engine light

My check engine light came on two days ago. I had cruise control set and tapped on brakes to slow down and then pushed resume accelerator and the light came on. The temperature is stable, oil is fine and within safe zone and gas cap is on securley. Wondering if I need to take it into a mechanic, have only owned the vehicle for about a month.

Well, the best thing to do is to bring it to your local parts place and get a free computer scan, they will tell you what codes you have and you can bring them back to me for further diagnosis
