1996 Jeep Cherokee gas mileage

Just purchased a used 1996 cherokee--seems to run very good with decent power and smoothness but gas mileage is only about 13mpg which seems to be low for this vehicle--what should I have my local mechanic check on or is this what I should expect from this vehicle--thanks

It might be time for a tune up, first thing to look at is the Air filter put it up to light and if u can see the light through it it's fine, but a new fram toughgaurd is cheap enough, also sparkplugs and wires, distributor cap and roto button. I did this to mine although mines a 5 speed and noticed I don't have to watch the gas gauge drop so fast. And it didn't set me back any either hope this works for you!
