Engine Mechanical problem
1992 Jeep Cherokee 6 cyl Four Wheel Drive Automatic 179k miles

hey guys I hope you can help a bit. Well I have kind of diagnosed the problem (scary) and I think its related to the fuel pump/ sending unit. It idles ok and will rev up with what seems like not really any problems. Its when I try to drive it I have the severe problem. For literally a few seconds it seems ok then it just starts sputtering and missing to the point where if you dont have at least a one mile lead on the person behind you then your going to be that idiot holding up traffic. Recently I ran the jeep very low on fuel and since then it start missing pretty bad and the problem got progressively worse even after I filled it to the brim with fuel. First I tried to just use some injector cleaner hoping that it would maybe clear up some old debree that could of been sitting at the bottom of the tank, that did not work. Then luckily my dad has a small used car lot with a garage and a lift and so I decided to try changing the fuel pump. So I changed only the fuel pump on the sending unit with what I think was a small universal one and I changed the fuel filter and plugs and wires to just to make sure. There is also a thing they called the sock filter at the bottom of the sending unit and I tried cleaning it the best I could. Well I was happy for about two weeks and then what do you know, I was once again that ass hole holding up traffic with a jeep that sounds like it has the worst case of emphzyema known to man. Its so bad that I dare not drive it and yes my girlfriend once again thinks im a loser with out a car and doesnt think its funny when I tell her that I own the biggest paper weight ever made. Well back to the point. So I was pretty upset and decided that since my muffler has already been missing for a year prior to this problem that maybe I will just cut off the catiylitic( how ever you spell it) converter since maybe it was plugged. Well I bet you can guess what that did for me. Now I have the largest and loudest paper weight on Gods beautiful green earth. So guys this is what im left with and I need some good advice. I don't know if I should go to a jeep dealer and buy a whole new sending unit which now unlike the old style comes in four seperate parts or what I should do. I am going to get all new exhaust just to let you know. So guys/ gals this is my dilema, I will replace whatever you think I should to get this thing running, I just dont want to spend money on stuff thats not needed. I need to get this running soon before my girlfriend replaces me. Shes hot and a good Christian, seriously I am not going to do better so. Help a guy out.

Hi jonsjeep
Great story I can hardly see to type for the tears in my eyes. Well let's see ran good after nonOEM pump installed then back to paper weight. You need to install OEM pump assembley thoes one size fits all don't provide enough flow or pressure. I know it's a lot of cash but that's the fix. And please replace exhaust and cat. For the birds and future generations.
Have A Blessed Day
