I'm looking to buy an XJS 3.6 Auto - has FSH and looks very clean - it has 102k miles on the clock but what immediate tell tale checks would you carry out before buying? . Also - what should the oil pressure guage be reading at idle & at higher revs?

Oil pressure at operating temp should read between 35 and 50 lbs. Also check with car in drive and foot on the brake which will give you a good idea of pressure under the most common type of idle. Other things to check for are cracked fuel lines, dirty cooling system, dirty brake fluid, worn accelerator linkage and any water leaks. Any of these conditions on their own are not serious but they are good indicators of futre problems.
