Passive restraint belt won't retract

I have a 1990, Jaguar XJ-6. The vehicle currently has 85,000 miles. I am the second owner of this vehicle.

The passive restraint belt (passenger) will not retract when the door is opened or the vehicle turned off. The belt will continously sound as if it is engaging then disengaging, but will not move from it's fixed position (engaged).

I can occasionally manually retract the belt to the door open (unengaged) position. When the door is closed it will move to the engaged position and resume it's previous action. Engage / unengage.

Any thoughts?

Thanks
Terry

You are going to LOVE this answer!

I had a 1991 Xj6 Vanden Plas Majestic - (purchased used with 56K miles) - with the same problem.

The bad news is that I had to have the problem fixed at a dealership three separate times during the time I owned the car. It is a known problem for these vehicles.

The good news is that those seatbelt systems are covered under a lifetime warranty! A Jaguar dealership has to fix that problem for you free of charge!

Each time I had a problem, I would call the dealership and they would bring a loaner Jag to my house, pick-up my car, fix it and return it detailed.

If I were you, I'd call a dealership and wouldn't even try to troubleshoot the issue.
