MY 1999 TROOPER 104000 (5.3L?). CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CALLED FOR EGR. REPLACED, RAN ABOUT 8 MONTHS NO PROBLEMS. RECENTLY CAME ON AGAIN TOOK REPLACEMENT BACK TO PARTS STORE AND GOT NEW ONE, PUT ON. LIGHT CAME BACK ON WITHIN 2 DAYS. ALSO HAVE TO PUT ABOUT 1 QUART OF OIL IN EVERY 3000 MILE OIL CHANGE. ABSOLUTELY DOES NOT SMOKE, NO LEAKS, WHERE IS THE OIL GOING AND COULD THIS HAVE ANYTHING TO DO WITH THE EGR.

It is probably burning it while you are driving and cant see it. Try manually applying the EGR valve with a vacuum pump, engine should stumble and almost if not completely die. If it doesnt, then all the oil it is burning has probably plugged up the EGR passages and they must be cleaned out for the system to function properly and the light to stay out
