The clutch had been making a high pitch wheezing sound when engaged for a few months, but now it is extemely difficult to shift gears while driving, and easier when the truck is turned off. It's old enough to replace the assembly, possibly a complete clutch replacement. The manual states to hoist the engine before pulling the transmission. Is this necessary and why?

Hi there,

you will need to support the engine when you remove the transmission so as not to over stress the engine mounts as the engine will flex well past any safe point and over stress the mounts, also you must be careful bot to stretch hoses and cables as well.
